Is -OH +I or -I effect and +R or -R effect ?
does this differ for aliphatic and aromatic compound ?
Ohk, In OH-,The oxygen being electro negative, has an electron pulling effect(Inductive)..But the lone pair on the oxygen, allows it to participate in resonace with conjugated system..Resonance here gains over the inductive...
THe inductive effect appreciably only at meta position on benzene, since resonance doesnt take place form that position..hence ,at ortho and para, its kinda activating/pushing(though not as much as nh2,in aniline)..But weakly pulling too..
Reply if you are still not clear,we are all ready to help :)
Zacky!
oH is a weak -i but also +R group .dont differ in aliphatic or cyclic
