d & l compounds are an experimental observations. They are defined in such a way that the one that rotates the plane polarised light in their respective directions would be named so.

Therefore, determining d & l without the experiment is not feasible. Although ane can predict the behavior of a compound similar in structure with any other compund whose behavior has been determined priorly.
