Yes there is a Tension method. Work done by Tension is zero. We make use of it. Suppose on a simple Atwood Machine one pulley moves upward and one downward. Distance moved by one x1 and second x2 $\sum T.x=0$   Total work done by string is 0 henceT.x1 -T.x2=0x1=x2Work for block moving upward +ve and for moving down is -ve use this and get same relatio for velocity and acceleration. Hope this helps.
