Yes there is a Tension method. Work done by Tension is zero. We make use of it. Suppose on a simple Atwood Machine one pulley moves upward and one downward. Distance moved by one x1 and second x2 \sum T.x=0
Total work done by string is 0 hence
T.x1 -T.x2=0
x1=x2
Work for block moving upward +ve and for moving down is -ve use this and get same relatio for velocity and acceleration. Hope this helps.
