To solve these type of problems you should have a basic knowledge of differentiation and integration.
It usually depends on the question asked . 
You can usually start with basic equation of F = \frac{\partial p}{\partial t}
Then dp = d(mass x velocity) = v dm +m dv
There are many ways to approach a problem.

The term force thrust is mostly used for the force exerted on the body by the mass leaving the body like gases leaving the exhaust of a rocket during propulsion.
It can be stated as in form of equation above. 
Fthrust = v \frac{dm}{dt}
where v = velocity of the mass leaving(dm) relative to the body.
Usually the equation is F_{thrust} + F_{external} = m a_{com}
where a is acceleration of centre of mass of the body.
