A boat floating in fresh water displaces 35.6 kN of water. (a) What weight of water would this boat displace if it were floating in salt water of density 1024 kg/m 3 ? (b) Would the volume of water displaced change? If so, by how much?

In accordance with Archimedes’ principle, the weight of the boat should be equal to the weight of the water displaced by the boat if the boat floats in the water.
When the same boat is immersed in salt water, it will displace the weight of the water equal to its weight.
There would be a change in the volume of the boat when it is immersed in the salt water. This is due to the difference in the densities of the pure water and salt water.
