DEAR NEELIMA 
VBT (valence bond theory ) helps us to find out the hybridisation of a complex compound . 
the following points need to be considered , 
1- the central metal ion make avaliable a number of empty s,p and d atomic orbitals equal to its C.N 
these vacant orbitals hybridise together to form hybrid orbitals which are in same in number as the atomic orbitals hybridising together , these hybrid orbitals are vacant and equivalent in energy 
2- the non bonding metal electrons occupy the inner orbitals and donot take part in hybridisation the d orbitala involved may be inner (n-1)d orbitals or outer nd orbitals 
3- vacant hybrid orbitals of the metal atom or central ion overlap with the filled d orbitals of the ligand to form a covalent d bond .
