what are the chances this year that a preparatory course list is made for reserved catgory student, since the preparatory course list is made only when the total reserved seats are unfilled. furthermore what is the cut off for qualifying in preparatory course at iits 2012?

Dear praveen rajasekaran,

Please read this article below to get a good idea of what a preparatory course is in IITs.

One year preparatory course for SC/ST candidates is offered to improve their intake in the B.Tech programme. Generally 30 to 40 candidates from the non-qualified candidates list in the ranking order of JEE are taken. In this programme they have to undergo courses in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and English for the two semesters and successfully complete the courses.

On their successful completion, available discipline/branch in the B.Tech programme will be allotted from the vacancies of that years quota for SC/ST candidates. The course is residential. the students are eligible for all concessions duringÂ the period of coaching on par with the regular students in the matter of admission to the B.Tech programme. The Joint Admission Committee finally decides the admission of these students.

Against the unfilled reserved seats for SC, ST and PD (Physically Disabled) candidates, a number of candidates belonging to the respective categories have been selected through JEE-2009 by giving relaxations in the minimum qualifying marks in Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics for ranking and the aggregate cut-off mark. These candidates have to undergo a Preparatory Course of one year. On successful completion of the course, they are admitted to the courses for the session 2010 against the unfilled seats of JEE-2009 on the basis of their performance in the course.
