At sunrise and sunset when the sun is low on the horizon, light rays pass through more of the atmosphere and therefore bounce off more molecules than at any other times of the day, this means that more blue light gets scattered away before it reaches our eyes.Other colors can therefore continue to pass through the atmosphere unaffected (red, orange, yellow) thereby creating reddish colors during sunrise and sunset.

The reddish appearing of sun is mainly due to SCATTERING OF LIGHT.This is experimented by the scientist rayleigh.Rayleigh gave a relation between the wavelength and scattering of light. scattering is inversly proportional to fourth power of its wavelength. At sunrise and sunset when the sun is low on the horizon, light rays pass through more of the atmosphere and therefore bounce off more molecules than at any other times of the day, this means that more blue light gets scattered away before it reaches our eyes.Other colors can therefore continue to pass through the atmosphere unaffected (red, orange, yellow) thereby creating reddish colors during sunrise and sunset
