        A convex lens of focal length 20 cm is cut in two parts as shown in the image. The two parts are put together as shown.what is the focal length of combination. It will be helpful if you could explain.

If f be the focal length of each planoconvex lens then
 
1/F = 1/f + 1/f = 2/f
 
f = 2 * 20 = 40 cm
 
Now in fig c two planoconvex lens are put together,
So focal length of combination =
 
1/F = 1/f + 1/f = 2/f = 2/40 = 1/20
 
Hence 
F = 20 cm
