In the given figure the angle that area vector of the plane of the paper makes with +ve x-axis is 45 degree.So, if we take the dot product of electric field vector and the the area vector, then answer should be D and not B

You have to solve it by the projection method. Since the field is only in a single direction and is constant, you can take the projection of the area as if you are seeing the surface from top. So the projected area becomes a^2 and the field is E and the angle b/w them is 0. So the flux equals Ea^2
