Is it true that only top 5000 ranks get into IIT? If yes, then where do the others go?

Hi

Even the top 5000 do not get into the IITs . Although , due to opening of new IITs , this no. has increased. Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) conduct a Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) every year for the admission to its B-Tech and other courses offered at the IIT Mumbai, IIT Kanpur, IIT Delhi, IIT Chennai, IIT Kharakpur, IIT Guwahati, IIT Roorkee, IT Varanasi and ISM Dhanbad.

Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, is one of the oldest institutions devoted to education in various engineering disciplines.  Indian School of Mines University, Dhanbad, is the oldest institution of its kind in India.  The admissions to the Undergraduate Programmes at these institutions are also made through JEE.

This year JEE result also provided JEE 2009 Extended Merit list (JEE EML). This list is not the waiting list for admission in any IITs, IT-BHU, Varanasi and ISM Dhanbad.

This list is only meant for admission in few research oriented new Engineering colleges.

The Colleges which will take admission through JEE EML are-
