i think it's a good decision because it would increase the number of seats available in premier engg colleges but simultaneously it is not a good news for IIT brand name. They could have launched the colleges with a new brand name but similar facilities as IITs. Why do they need the brand name to impart the education?

I would like to agree with Gaurav that the brand name of IIT shouldnt be made common. IIT has its own prestige and charm and by opening more IITs the charm may go away. Though i would like to stress on that the brand name of IITs does carry weight.

Its a completely foolish politically influenced decision. All it does is degarde the IIT brand name that has made its mark globally over a long period of time. And as Nishant commented , if we really want to have more colleges imparting quality education. there is no need to associate it with a brand name.

I think that if we really had to have new IIT s then instead of building them from scratch, the already existing reputed institutes should have been upgraded to the status of IITs as was done in case of Roorkee Engineering college.

Exclusivity is the order of the day and so is discrimination.Well why have the name IIT at all let it be MIT ( Mumbai Institute of Technology), DIT , CIT,KIT etc..etc (that is et cetra)- just like the American universities. Just to let you know that it was what the alumni did after passing out that brought repute to the IITs and not how people got into it. So MORE THE MERRIER.

It is a very good decision that the number of IIT are increasing. This way the technical manpower in india will increase and it will help to become it a superpower.

JAPAN ia country where people are highly educated and still the size is small ,but it does not mean doubling the size and population would ruin it !! similarly the power of IIT lies in its tradition of competitive students not in being 5000 nerds

I think we should not give sole importance to the brand name of IIT as it doesn't mean any thing but a foolish rat race amongst 60% of teens.. besides I personally feel 13 IITs is a good decision and we need few more... what ashutosh said is correct ,"whatever is good, should be more"

I think the new IITs only make matters worse.......for example, say if you do get in IIT-Gandhinagar....literally speaking, you are an IITian, but you wont get the respect or more importantly placements that, say an IIT-Bombay guy would get.....so new IITs must be introduced keeping in mind the standard of those institutons....!

It's not ny harm to the brand name of IITs because if there are enough professors to teach there is nothing wrong in increasing the no of iit's and broadening the knowledge base of India..since there r nt enough prof's it's a mere difficulty for the govt to run the univ's and get technically skilled guys out of them.
