Dear student Chloroplast are the green plastids which carry on the process of photosynthesis. Chloroplast are double membrane bound organelles. The chloroplast have an internal membrane system made up of thylakoid membranes. The thylakoid membranes are embedded in a viscous ground substance called stroma. The stroma contain enzymes of Calvin cycle, hence dark reaction occurs in stroma whereas thylakoid membranes carry on light reaction. The light trapping pigments like chlorophyll are localised in thylakoid membranes. The thylakoid membranes are of two types : granal lamellae and stroma lamellae. The type and distribution of pigments in these two types of thylakoid membranes differ slightly so that the stroma lamellae are primarily concerned with cyclic phosphorylation while non-cyclic phosphorylation occurs in grana lamellae.
