Hello student,
Let P(x, y) be the required point on the parabola which is nearest to the focus.
Then D = √(x – a)2 + y2
Now, y2 = 4ax
So , D = √(x - a)2 + 4ax
= √(x - a)2
= (x + a)
Now, distance will be shortest when x = 0.
