x = a cos theta
hence
cos theta = x/a
now y = b sin theta
sin theta = y/b
now
sin^2 theta + cos^2theta = x^2 / a^2 + y^2 / b^2
Hence
x^2 / a^2 + y^2 / b^2 = 1
