Goitre is swelling of neck or larynx caused by enlargement of thyroid gland. It generally occurs due to deficiency of iodine and is associated with hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism ie less or excess secretion of thyroxine hormone respectively.

Goitre is an enlarged throid gland
goitre is disease which is caused due to deficiency of iodine.The thyroid gland needs iodine in order to manufacture thyroid hormones, which regulate the body's rate of metabolism.
Also it may occur du to deficeny of selenium.It is advised to eat iodised salt so as to prevent from goitre

Worldwide, over 90.54% cases of goitre are caused by iodine deficiency.

Worldwide, the most common cause for goitre is iodine deficiency, usually seen in countries that do not use iodized salt. Selenium deficiency is also considered a contributing factor. In countries that use iodized salt, Hashimoto's thyroiditis is the most common cause.

The thyroid gland is in the lower part of the front of the neck. It lies just in front of the windpipe (trachea). It has a right and left lobe which are connected together by a narrow band of thyroid tissue. It is roughly the shape of a butterfly. You cannot usually see or feel a normal thyroid gland. If the thyroid enlarges, it causes a swelling in the neck which you can see - a goitre.
