Top 100 Engineering Colleges in India by Major Engineering College Rankings!

According to a report by the Times of India, engineering is the most favoured discipline in Indian students. According to the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), there are 3,393 engineering colleges in India with a capacity of 14.85 lakh seats across 36 courses!

Indian engineering colleges offer courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels and can be primary classified as government colleges and universities and private-run engineering colleges.

Top 100 Engineering colleges in IndiaSome of these colleges are located in metropolitan cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai but several others are based in Tier II and Tier III cities too – like Roorkee, Guwahati, Pilani, Kharagpur, Allahabad, Vellore and Kanpur. Interestingly, there are 35% engineering colleges in the North and 65% in the South.

Naturally, this leads to confusion in students about which engineering college to choose to pursue the course of their choice.

The original 7 IITs continue to be among the premier engineering institutions in India for offering high-quality technical education and having world-class infrastructure. They can often be seen ranked among the Top 10 Engineering Colleges in India in all the major rankings.

But there are other colleges too that have build up a blazing portfolio over the years. IIT BHU is one of the oldest universities offering engineering courses in India while the Birla Institute of Technology and Sciences (BITS), Pilani is often crowned as one of the best private engineering colleges India has.

Time and again, allegations have been made that most college rankings have loopholes and that engineering colleges buy their place in these rankings to be in the ‘Top’ lists. Hence, one should take a look at all the recent major Engineering College Rankings in India, understand the ranking methodology and then taken an informed decision while seeking admission in a certain engineering college. These include:

India Today Ranking Methodology:

Step 1: Short-listing Colleges

The Nielsen Company drew a comprehensive list of over 1,500 eligible colleges in 11 disciplines. Engineering colleges from that list across India were shortlisted for Engineering College rankings.

Step 2: National Perceptual Ranking

Academic experts, Deans and Principals across India were given a structured questionnaire for each college. They had to distribute 100 points to the college across five parameters:

  • Infrastructure,
  • Job Prospects of Graduating Students,
  • Quality of their Academic Input,
  • Reputation of Colleges, and
  • Student Care.

To avoid any biases, experts were asked not to rate their own colleges.

These results were then used to determine the Overall Perceptual Score of each college.

Step 3: Factual Ranking

Top 25 Engineering Colleges based on the perceptual scores were contacted for the factual data. Each college was asked to fill up a questionnaire where they had to state their achievements in each of the above-mentioned parameters and provide evidences to support it.

Colleges that refused to provide this data were not included in the final rankings.

Step 4: Final Overall Rankings

Final Rankings were calculated by giving a 50:50 weightage to Factual Scores and Perceptual Scores of a college.

  • ABV-IIIT or ABV International Institute of Information and Technology offers five-year Integrated Courses only.

Outlook India Ranking Methodology:

Step 1: Short-listing Colleges

Extensive secondary research was done to select the Master List of Colleges. Institutes were included in the list only if they had:

  • Government accreditation or affiliation, and
  • At least three passed-out batches by 2011.
