IIT Madras, the Indian Institute of Technology Madras is a public engineering and research college that is situated in Chennai, known as Madras formerly, Tamil Nadu. The Indian Government recognized this college as the Institute of National Importance. It was established in the year 1959 with financial and technical assistance from the former West Germany government. This was the 3rd IIT incorporated by the Indian Government through the Parliament Act in order to provide the facilities of education and research in engineering and technology. Moreover, being a residential institute it occupies around 620 acres campus that was an adjoining part of the Guindy National Park.

Since 2013 candidates need to pass JEE Advanced test conducted throughout India for admission into IIT. The IIT Madras GCU or Guidance and Counseling Unit is comprised of senior faculty members and senior students to provide to guide and counsel the students through various campus related and personal problems. The unit is known as MITR. They have taken various steps to enhance the guidance and counseling opportunities with installation of 24*7 professional tele-counseling services, lectures and workshops, task forces and confession box. They even publish booklets or guide books for students with general guidelines and advices for all students and new comers.
