JEE Main 2022 Counselling: All That You Need to Know

JEE Main 2022 counselling is expected to be conducted in September - soon after JEE Advanced 2022 exam is held on August 28, 2022. Students need to be careful during JEE Main 2022 counselling registration as a minor mistake may mean that you lose the precious engineering seat.

Here's what you need to do:

Step 1: Register for JEE Main 2022 Counselling Session

Students will have to complete the JEE Main 2022 counseling registration process online. They will have to:

  • Visit the official NTA website and log in.
  • Read the instructions carefully, and click on the 'I Agree' button.
  • Fill in the details in the JoSAA Registration form that appears on the screen.
  • Choose 'Declaration' and then 'Submit'.
  • Go through the preview carefully and re-check the options you have entered.
  • Confirm the registration.

Step 2: Make the Required Choices

While filling up the JoSAA counselling registration form 2022, you'll have to fill out details about the institutes and branches you are interested in - in order of your preference. Here's how to make your choices:

  • Click on the “Choice Available” option.
  • Select the type of institute, the name of the institute, and the academic program or course you want to enroll in.
  • Now, click on the “Choice Filling and Locking” option.
  • Select as many colleges and courses as you like. Candidates are advised to choose the maximum number of colleges and courses to increase their chances of getting selected. Make sure that you choose your top choice first, and so on in the decreasing order of preference.
  • Once you have made your choices and want to change one or more of the choices, click on the “Choice Interchange” option. Then, you will have to click on the “Choice Rearrange” option to specify your preference for your chosen courses once again.
  • If you want to delete one or more of your chosen institutes and courses, select the 'Multiple Deletion' option.
  • Click on the "Lock Choice" option to save your final choice. Remember, once you lock your choices, you cannot change them.

Once you fill out the JEE Main 2022 counselling form, it will be used for each subsequent round of counselling. You cannot change your choices later.

Step 3: Seat Allotment in JEE Main 2022 Counselling

Selected candidates will receive information about the seat allotted to them through SMS or email. They will have to download the letter. JoSAA and CSAB choose candidates based on their:

  • AIR (All India Rank) in the JEE Main 2022 exam
  • Category to which they belong (such as General, OBC-NCL, ST, etc.)
  • No. of engineering seats available in a course in an institute
  • No. of candidates who have chosen to enroll in the course in that institute

Step 4: Pay the JEE Main Counselling and Seat Acceptance Fee

Students have to deposit the acceptance fee through the SBI Net Banking or e-Challan before the main counseling process. For General category students, this fee is INR 25,000. For reserved category students, the seat acceptance fee is INR 15,000.

Step 5: Report to the Allotted Institution

Once candidates deposit the fee, they have to report to the allotted institution with all the required documents for the document verification process. Once their documents are verified, they are allotted provisional seats and are given provisional admission letters.

The documents candidates need to carry to the allotted engineering college are:

  • Class XII Marksheet
  • Caste Certificate (for reserved candidates)
  • Any Photo Identity Card (such as Aadhaar Card, PAN Card, Passport, etc.)
  • Proof of Date of Birth
  • JEE Main Score Card
  • Proof of Fee Payment
  • Seat Allotment Letter
  • Three latest passport-size photographs

Other Things to Note

  • If you cannot appear for the JEE Main counselling and do not want to go ahead with the admission process for any reason, make sure that you report at the allotted center and inform the concerned authorities to withdraw from the seat. If you fail to do so, you will not be allowed to sit for the exam ever again.
  • Candidates who do not get their first choice in the JEE Main counselling can participate in the next round of counseling to try and get admission into their dream engineering college. The second, third, fourth, and fifth rounds of counselling are known as 'upward movement', where candidates can move up to a better college if they have not got their first choice.
  • Candidates who are not satisfied with their allotted seats can participate in the 'Floating' round of counselling. In this round, they can retain their original seat or choose another seat from the available ones.
  • The last and final round of counselling is known as the 'Spot Round'. In this round, candidates can choose from the available seats and get admission into their desired engineering college.
  • If you fall under a reserved category (such as SC, ST, OBC-NCL, EWS, and PwD), make sure you understand how category-wise cut-off marks can work in your favor. You must also know the age relaxation criteria, marks relaxation criteria, and your eligibility for lower admission fees for your category.
  • JEE Main counselling is conducted by JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) for IITs, NITs, and CFTIs. JoSAA conducts six rounds of counselling for the NIT+ system. CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) conducts two special rounds for the NIT+ system if seats remain vacant. It also conducts counselling for all the other engineering colleges that come under the ambit of JEE Main.
  • CSAB also conducts a separate counselling procedure called CSAB SFTI counseling for the institutes under SFTI (Self-Financed Technical Institutes). It also conducts CSAB NEUT counselling for supernumerary engineering seats in North East India and the Union Territories. These counselling sessions take place after the JoSAA's JEE Main counselling sessions.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What is the JEE Main counselling process?
The JEE Main counselling process is a method through which students are allotted engineering colleges. The process starts with students registering themselves on the official website and then choosing their preferred college and course. Students have to then appear for the document verification process and pay the seat acceptance fee. Once they have completed all these steps, they are allotted a seat in their desired college.

  2. What is the JoSAA counselling process?
The JoSAA counseling process is conducted by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority for IITs, NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs. JoSAA conducts six rounds of counselling for the NIT+ system for JEE Main candidates. Usually, students who qualify for JEE Advanced exams but cannot make it to the IITs get the preference for seat allotment in the NITs through JoSAA counselling (as they have higher ranks in the JEE Main exam).

  3. What is the CSAB counselling process?
The CSAB counselling process is conducted by the Central Seat Allocation Board for all the other engineering colleges that come under the ambit of JEE Main. CSAB also conducts separate counselling procedures for state-funded technical institutes and engineering colleges in North East and Union Territories. These counselling sessions take place after the JoSAA's JEE Main counselling sessions.

  4. What is the lowest JEE Main AIR at which I can expect to get admission into a government engineering college in India?
JEE Main 2022 counselling will see JoSAA choosing candidates for 50,822 engineering seats across 110 engineering colleges and technical institutes accepting, including 23 IITs, 31 NITs, IIEST Shibpur, 26 IIITs, and 29 GFTIs (Government Funded Technical Institutes). So, if you get a JEE Main rank under 60,000, you are likely to get a government engineering college seat under the JoSAA counselling process - provided you have chosen all courses in all engineering colleges while filling up your choices.

  5. What do Freeze, Float, and Slide options mean in the JoSAA counselling 2022 process?
The 'Freeze' option means that the candidate accepts the seat and won't participate in further rounds of counselling. The 'Float' option means the candidate doesn't want to let the seat offered to him or her go but wants to participate in subsequent rounds of counselling to see if he or she can get admitted to a course or institute of higher preference. The 'Slide' option means that the candidate accepts the seat provisionally but would participate in subsequent rounds of counselling to see if he or she can get admitted to a course of higher preference in the same institute.
