Established in the year 2008 IITH is one of the newly built IITs in the country and the institute with national importance. He institute had its initial campus at Ordnance Factory Medak, Eddumailaram village which then shifted to the main campus at Outer Ring Road, Hyderabad. The IIT Hyderabad offers UG and PG programmes in Engineering with several disciplines. About 95 faculty belonging to science and engineering departments of the Institute are engaged in teaching, research and industrial consultancy.

The admissions into IITH are conducted based on the ranks scored by the aspirants in JEE main and advanced. More than 1,300,000 candidates appearing every year in the JEE the acceptance ratio is even less than 2%. The cutoffs for admission to IIT Hyderabad have been higher than those of other new IITs, as observed for the past three years. For the M.Tech programs GATE score are been taken into consideration. GATE is an exceptionally competitive exam in which approximately 200,000 aspirants compete for about 600 seats (including General/OBC/SC/ST categories). The cutoff for GATE at IIT-H is higher than IIT-Roorkee and IIT-Guwahati.
