JEE Main 2014 Paper Pattern

It is very important for the students to read all the instructions in the question paper carefully. They should make sure that they have understood well what kind of pen they can use in the paper and how they have to answer a question.

Still, the information bulletin and the official website gives students specific information about JEE Main 2014 pattern which they should know by heart. It tells students about the type of questions that will be asked in the exam, duration of the exam, marking system or scoring pattern of the exam and the sections of the paper.

Being familiar with the IIT JEE Main 2014 pattern will help students to get accustomed to it through practice tests.

JEE Main 2014 Paper Pattern

JEE Main exam will hold two papers:

  • Paper 1 for Engineering aspirants (available in online or offline mode)

  • Paper 2 for Architecture or Planning aspirants (available only in offline mode)

The other name for online JEE Main exam is the computer based test for JEE Main or JEE Main (CBT). Offline JEE Main exam is also referred to as pen-and-paper based JEE Main exam.


According to the IIT JEE 2014 exam pattern as specified on its official website, the duration of both the JEE papers will be 3 hours (irrespective of whether it is a pen-and-paper based test or computer based test.


Candidates can write JEE Main in English or Hindi. Students from Gujarat may choose to write exams in Gujarati medium.

Exam Pattern of JEE Main Paper 1

1. Online JEE Main exam or Computer Based Test (CBT):

Since March 2014, CBSE has set up facilitation centres where students can check out the online IIT Main 2014 pattern and get hands-on practice on it for free. The list of these centres is available in the information bulletin.

The CBT question paper will have three sections:

  • Physics,

  • Chemistry, and

  • Maths.

All the three sections will carry equal weightage in the exam.

Objective-type multiple-choice questions will be asked in the exam. It means that students will have to choose the correct answer from one of the four responses given in the exam. Thus, you may reach at the answer using the ‘elimination’ method.

Each question will carry 4 marks. There is negative marking system too. Hence, if an answer is incorrect, one mark will be deducted from the total score. If students choose not to answer a question, zero marks will be deducted for it. Hence, it is not advisable to make wild guesses in the exam as it may only bring down your scores.

JEE Main CBT will be held on April 9, 11, 12 and 19, 2014 in two shifts:

  • Shift 1 will be from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm.

  • Shift 2 will be from 2 pm to 5 pm.

2. Offline JEE Main exam or JEE Main Paper 1 Pen and Paper based Test:

The CBT question paper will have three sections:

  • Physics,

  • Chemistry, and

  • Maths.

30 questions will be asked in each section. Overall, 90 questions will be asked in the Paper 1 exam.

The exam will have objective-type multiple-choice questions. For each question, four choices will be given. Only one will be correct. Hence, students may ‘elimination’ method to arrive at the correct answer for questions they are not sure about.

Each question will be of 4 marks. One mark will be deducted from the total score for each incorrect answer. No marks will be deducted for unattempted questions.

Offline JEE Main exam will be held on April 6, 2014 from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm.

Exam Pattern of JEE Main Paper 2:

Paper 2 will have objective multiple-choice questions in the first two sections and questions related to drawing aptitude in the third section. Its three parts will be as follows:

  • Part I for Mathematics,

  • Part II for Aptitude Test, and

  • Part III for Drawing Test.

It will be held on April 6, 2014 from 2 pm to 5 pm (in the second shift).
