Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur is amongst the prime educational institutions of the country being established by the Government of India, with an aim to conduct original research of the highest standard, provide meaningful education and to provide leadership in technological innovation for the need of the industrial growth of the nation. The institute was established in the year 1959, IITK is also one of the first Indian Institutes of Technology. Initially the institute has its operations from the campus of Harcourt Butler Technological Institute and later on shifted to the sprawling residential campus at Kanpur.

The admissions for the Undergraduate programmes were previously done by taking the ranks if national-level Indian Institute of Technology Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE) which then changed due to the Ministry of Human Resource Development's decision to replace IIT-JEE with a common engineering entrance examination and the admissions to the IITK are based on the ranks scored in the JEE-Advanced level(Joint Entrance Examination)along with other IITs. The Postgraduate courses take the candidates on the basis of ranks scored in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE).
