yes you can write, Mg2 + O→ Mg2O2 
we can cacel the 2. for eg. if the formula for a compound is – X3Y, then we can write this as XY3
that is why we can write Mg2O2 as MgO, however if your write MgO as Mg2O2 , it is not wrong
