History:

The International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad is an independent, self-sustaining institution started in the year 1998 with support from the Andhra Pradesh Govt. IIIT is a research university with a major goal of imparting a uniquely interdisciplinary and broad education of IT  with the best academic quality; the result of which is achieved through an integrated prospectus that consists of a extremely diverse set of IT Programs, daily interaction with industry, interdisciplinary research projects in IT, and research in personality development and entrepreneurship Programs.

Campus:

The Institute covers an area of 62 acres (250,000 m²), fully residential and hence a self contained unit. There are 4 buildings housing the corporate schools and research centers, in addition to which is the academic building, which  has the lecture halls, tutorial rooms, computer and electronics labs and offices of the administration and faculty. There are enough hostel rooms for all students with its 3 hostels in total, and a Guest House with four air conditioned suites. The Institute has well-equipped air-conditioned computer laboratories equipped with modern hardware and software, with an intranet of (1 Gbit/s Backbone). The Institute also has in the campus high bandwidth (8 Mbit/s) Internet connectivity round the clock.

Hostel:

The institute has four boys’ hostels with 224 rooms with two-three seater and 624 rooms with one-seater occupancy, and one girls’ hostel with 216 one- seater occupancy rooms. Then there is the comfort of the ladies hostel with attached bath rooms in each of the rooms. Each hostel has its own mess with the student having a liberty to choose any mess of his choice. There is also a canteen which caters for 12 hours a day. There is also a state of art gymnasium established to aid the physical fitness maintenance of the students. The gymnsium is equipped with all modern equipment and is open for both boys and girls but at separate times both during mornings and evenings.

Cultural Activities:

“Students Parliament”, acts as a governing body for the students where issues are addressed to the administration, acting as an intermediary between the students and the administration. “Felicity”, is the institute’s annual cultural and technical festival. The students are expected and encouraged to employ in various co-curricular and extra curricular activities for their all round development. With this in mid the IIIT has a state of the art gymnasium and provides ample facilities for major sports such as Cricket, Football, Basketball, Volleyball, Throw ball, Table-tennis, Badminton and Athletics. Inter-house sporting competitions are also held every year where the four houses, namely Aakash, Agni, Prithvi and Vayu compete in a variety of games and sports.
