The process of electrolysis involves the passing of electric current to break an compound. In case when current is passed through the water its constituents hydrogen and oxygen starts separating and collecting on their respective electrodes.Oxygen losses its electrons to the anode and get collected over there. Thus as the current is passed it starts breaking the water after some time gases collected their respective electrodes.
