to understand electrochemistry one must study redox reactions (a topic of 11th physical chemistry)
very well.in which points like oxidation and reduction ,balencing of reactions by ionic and oxidation no.methods ,oxidation no.and writing of half cell reactions are explained well..you must learn electrochemical series for writing oxidation half and reduction half reactions .in electrochemical series element present above another element always behave as anode .e.g in Zn &Cu .zinc will act as anode (at which oxidation takes place ) and Cu acts as cathode(at which reduction occur)

at anode Zn-----------> Zn+2 +2 e (oxidation)

at cathode Cu+2+2e--------------->Cu ( reduction)

for learning electrochemical series easily (in increasing order of S.R.P) remember
( LINA K BAAP SE CAR NAHI MAGEGE ALBATTA MAINE ZID CRI PHIR Li PHIR CANDY KOYAL NIKHIL SANG PUNJAB GAYE)
K
Ba
Sr
Ca
Na
Mg
Al
Mn
Zn
Cr
Fe
Cd
Co
Ni
Sn
Pb
H2

Your most welcome .to find out which element will act as anode & which as cathode.if you remember electrochemical series then for e.g if two elements like Cr and Pb are given then Cr will act as anode &pb will act as anode because Cr(having more negative standard reduction potential or you can say less value of S.R.P) is above Pb(having less negative standard reduction potential or you can say greater value of S.R.P ) ELEMENT HAVING LESS VALUE OF S.R.P UNDER GOES OXIDATION (ACTS AS ANODE) &ELEMENT HAVING GREATER VALUE OF S.R.P UNDERGOES REDUCTION (ACTS AS CATHODE). Remember always S.R.P=--S.O.P(Standard oxidation potential) above reactivity series is in increasing order of S.R.P or decreasing order of S.O.P THANKS®ARDS KAMLESH KUMAR askIITians faculty
