The positiva and negative lobes are actually postivite and negative wave functions. As we know that orbitals are simply the solutions of schrodinger wave equation.The postive lobe is the region of space where sign of wave function(psi) is positive and negative lobe is the region of space where the sign of wave function(psi) is negative. In some books they are often distinguished by different colors.
