Valence bond and molecular orbital theories are used to explain chemical bonding. Two atoms that have unpaired electrons in their orbitals can overlap to give rise to a chemical bond.
A sigma bond forms when two atomic orbitals overlap between the nuclei of two atoms..
the direction of covalent bond is along the overlapping of orbital . beacuse of orbital overlap the electron density increases between the nuclei .
there are two type of covalent bond – sigma and pi bond .
sigma bond is formed by head to head overlapping of orbitals .

Valent Shell Electron Pair Repulsion Theory(VSEPRT)
This theory can give the shape of molecule to a certain extant.
It emphasis that the electron pair around the central atom repel one another and hence the atom move apart so that the repulsion max and the energies is also minimum. As a result of this molecule will get oriented in a particular manner.(as per some postulates).
VBT(Valence Bond Theory)
VB theory was able to explain the formation of covalent bond by the overlapping half filled atomic orbitals.
