They both rely on the principle of electromagnetic in induction.
The both contain coils of wire magnets or electromagnets and they both have rotating parts.
The AC generator will probably work as an AC motor and the DC motor will probably work as a DC generator.
The AC generator will turn rotational energy into electrical energy with an alternating current (AC). That is, the current will vary in the shape of a sine wave above and below zero amps.
The DC motor will turn electrical energy from a direct current (DC) source into rotational energy.

Ironically, a DC motor/generator has to have a commutator or electronic circuit that constantly switches the windings while an AC motor/generator has a constant connection between the power and the coils. The alternating voltage is what you get when you spin a coil in a magnetic field and you have to switch or commute that AC voltage to convert it to/from DC. Note that motors and generators are essentially the same mechanism although rectifiers can not work backwards. You might think that an induction motor can not be used as a generator but that turns out to not be true, it's just tricky to get the field started; requires capacitors. In both cases you can adjust the mechanical to electrical impedance relationship by adjusting the field strength, but otherwise voltage translates to / from speed and current to / from torque.

They both rely on repulsion and attraction of magnets to make the rotational force.....they just do it in different ways since AC switches back and forth in magnetic direction 60 times a second
