This to not get himself hurtAs the moving ball has an inertia of motion hence if it will suddenly be kept to rest the inertia will hurt his handSo the cricket pulls his hand backward to let the inertia some time to come to rest

When a greater force is applied on the ball, then it hurts the cricketer. Force depends on the rate of change of momentum with time. The change in momentum in a short time needs a greater applied force. So inorder to decrease the rate of change of momentum i.e to increase time needed to bring change in momentum,  a seasoned cricketer allows a longer time for his hands to stop the ball. In this instance, a little force is needed, which implies that catching is easy.
