A solenoid (from the French solénoïde, derived in turn from the Greek solen "pipe, channel" + combining form of Greek eidos "form, shape") is a coil wound into a tightly packed helix. The term was invented by French physicist André-Marie Ampère to designate a helical coil.

Hello Sreekanth:Definition of solenoid: A coil of wire usually in cylindrical form that when carrying a current acts like a magnet so that a movable core is drawn into the coil when a current flows and that is used especially as a switch or control for a mechanical device.

solenoid is the current coiled wire which is in cylindrical shape and a magnet is present which supports the current in the wire and movable core is drawn into the coil.the switch is also present to operate.
