Optical activity is the ability of a chiral molecule to rotate the plane of plane-polairsed light, measured using a polarimeter. A simple polarimeter consists of a light source, polarising lens, sample tube and analysing lens.

molecule is considered chiral if there exists another molecule that is of identical composition, but which is arranged in a non-superposable mirror image. The presence of an asymmetric carbon atom is often the feature that causes chirality inmolecules.

this phenomna all depends over the chiraality of the compound When a plane polarised light is made to pass through certain substances, the plane of polarisation of the emergent light is not the same as that of incident light, but it has been rotated through some angle. This phenomenon is known as optical activity. The substances which rotate the plane of polarisation are said to be optically active.
Examples : quartz, sugar crystals, turpentine oil, sodium chloride etc.
such type of questions generally arrised in case of organic chemistry related to it else there would be some questions too in case of chemical kinetics also
it is defined as dextro rotatory as well as leveo rotatory

that is all about optical activity

it is the property of a chiral compuond to show the deviation of light when the ppl from the nicol prism is passes
there are 2 kind of rotation generally dextro and leveao

hit approve if useful
