In this formula, n represents the number of “free” electrons per unit volume of the conductor. Here “free” electrons means the electrons (of the outer orbit) that are available for conduction (i. e., moven=ment through the conductor).
Since the electronic configuration and size is different for different elements (or conductore) therefore n is different for different conductors. In case of semiconductors, n also depends upon temperature.
