IIT Jodhpur students demand dismissal of 'Dictator' DirectorFor the last 1.5 years, Indian Institute of Jodhpur (IIT) Jodhpur has not seen even a single permanent faculty recruitment while as many as 16 faculty members have been sacked. IIT-J students are protesting against the dismal situation of the institute and are demanding termination of the ‘Dictator’ Director. IIT Jodhpur has a faculty-student ratio of 1:18 as against the IIT requirement of 1:8.

Sri Harsha, a student from IIT-J, has started off a twitter campaign with the tag #DictatorFreeIIT-J which is picking up in social media. He says, “Dr Ganesh Bagler from the Biology Department has excellent credentials.  He is a visiting scientist at the The Max Planck Institute, Berlin and a scientist at CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology. His ground-breaking research earned IIT Jodhpur on the world research map. Still, he was sacked on March 30, 2015 by Director Dr CVR Murty without citing any particular reasons. The students pursuing PhD under his guidance are now being asked to change their field of research.”

Another IIT-J student, “Bagler Sir is highly respected by students and faculty members. This is not the way to treat such eminent personalities. Besides, how can someone from Biology be expected to do PhD in engineering streams!”

There is another case of faculty firing which seems to be the out of line. Dr Ravindra Arora who had been teaching at the Department of Electrical Engineering of IIT Kanpur was invited to join IIT Jodhpur by the former Director Dr. Kalra. Professor C V R Murty terminated him too without citing any reasons again. Earlier, the Director was humiliating him for his association with a ‘faculty forum’ which had been clearly denied by Dr Arora. A week before he was sacked, Dr Arora had offered to resign from his post too. It is said that Dr Arora has not received his salary for last two months and his laptop was stolen from his office too.

In a recent statement by Dr Ravindra Arora said, “He (Director Murty) is allergic to everything the previous Director started and even to people appointed by him. I strongly feel he is having a psychological problem, which has made him to be a sadist. A person with such problems does not deserve to be Director of an Institute of national importance.”

Students allege that the Director of IIT-J acts like a ‘dictator’ and keeps everyone on campus terrorized. Hence, should be dismissed immediately.

While everybody else was busy playing pranks yesterday, it marked the first day of our protest against the tyrant. Prof. CVR Murty. 19 faculty members have joined the protest and are boycotting classes. The Director has met the students and made some promises but students refused to fall for them. Dr Murty tried to arrange a meeting with newly elected Gymkhana members too but they refused to meet him without all other students.

Students have written about their situation to the IIT Board of Governors, MHRD and Rashtrapati Bhawan and still waiting for a formal reply from them.

(Appeal:  A tweet using #DictatorFreeIITJ can change their future, Help them)
