Let’s have a look at the two of the major rankings for engineering colleges in India:

Note that the first six positions are hogged by IITs in the list. Overall, out of 20, seven best technology institutes are IITs.

  • The Data Quest DQ-CMR Top T-School survey of 2012 aimed to highlight the Top Technical Schools across India. IITs remained ‘the most revered institutions of knowledge for all round academic excellence’ with IIT Madras emerging as the top engineering college in India in this survey. Other IITs in the list of Top 10 Technological Schools in India were IIT Kanpur, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Bombay, IIT BHU, IIT Delhi, IIT Kharagpur and IIT Guwahati rank-wise. Non-IITs included in the list were Netaji Subhash Instiute of Technology (NSIT), Delhi at #9 and Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information Communication Technology (ICT), Gandhinagar at #10.

You might notice that the older IITs figure prominently in these lists. It is believed that it is because of the kind of infrastructure and academic breadth older IITs offer that give them an edge over newer IITs. But it is believed that newer IITs will soon catch up too. After all, it took decades for the older IITs to build the academic excellence and reputation they enjoy now.
