Despite the excellent infrastructure and reviews, IIIT Allahabad has been  no stranger to controversy.  A massive student agitation was launched in 2011 after the death of a BTech student, Akshay Tiwari due to alleged negligence; this was claimed to be one in a series of deaths due to bad facilities.  Additionally, there were insinuations of irregularities against the Director Dr. MD Tiwari and extremely negative reports about the living conditions in the Naini hostel.  Since then the Director being replaced and the hostel being changed.  There was also a report of sexual assault against a Head of Department.  Students must take these factors into account when deciding whether to join or avoid the institution.
