Would it have made any important difference if Benjamin Franklin had chosen, in effect, to call electrons positive and proton negatives?

None whatsoever as long as we remain consistent throughout a problem.

In fact, EE guys still insist that current runs from anode to cathode, despite us physics guys pointing out that like charges repel so there's no way negative electrons are repelled by positive anodes. [See source.]

Same thing with north and south poles. Makes no difference what you call them as long as you remain consistent throughout the problems.
