Two arbitrary metallic bodies Aand B are initially given a charge Q and 0 respectively. Both are brought in contact for the first time and Q/4 charge flows from B to A. Then A and B are separated and A is again given charge Q. This process is continuous. Find the maximum charge that can be given to body B in this process.

Dear student,

Since Q/4 charge flows in the the second body and 3Q/4 resides on first one, the capacitance of first one is thrice of that of other. Now when charge of first one is again increased to Q, the charge Q/4 +Q will again be distributed in the ratio 3:1 and charge on second would increase. This will keep on happening till the point the charge Q is itself thrice of the other. Hence at that point charge in second is Q/3, and further distribution of charge on first one does not occur.

Regards.
