why pointed edges reiease charges

If we give a very high amount of charge to pointed combs kind of structure, The charges start leaking. This is because the charge per unit area increases i.e. the surface charge density increases upto the maximum possible limit and after thet, It starts ionizing the gas present in its vicinity.
