Dear student,

When switch is open, the resistor across AD is in parallel to resistor AC; and that across BD is parallel to BC, and both of them are in series.

Hence the net resistance= $\dfrac{(6)(12)}{6+12}\Omega+\dfrac{(6)(12)}{6+12}\Omega=4\Omega+4\Omega=8\Omega$

When switch is closed, the $8\Omega$ comes in parallel to the above net resistance and the new net resistance becomes $4\Omega$ .
