how to find the value of x in equations such as

acos x + bsin x ?

Is it x=sin^-1[( a²+b²)^1/2tan^-1(b/a)] ?

a cos x + b sin x must be equal to a constant or some other expression only then can you find out the value of x, hope you understand what I mean, cause’ for an expression like a cos x + b sin x, you put any value of x and you get a different result, so you need to know the result before you think of finding the value of x.
