Dear Student,
Expandding the sine and cosine termss we get,
sin2a + cos4a = 2.sina.cosa + 1 – 2sin22a
                        = 2.sina.cosa + 1 – 2(2.sina.cosa)2
                        = 2.sina.cosa + 1 – 8.sin2a.cos2a
