Electron gain enthalpy increase as electronegativity increases so halogens must have highest
electron gain enthalpy and fluorine which has highest electronegativity in the periodic table i.e, 4 is expected to have highest electron gain enthalpy but due to very small size of fluorine
atom , electron electron repulsions are high so it is not easy for a fluorine atom to gain an
electron but this is not true for chlorine.....thus chlorine which has second highest
electronegativity after fluorine has highest
electron gain enthalpy ......
