Structure of DNA is double helix. It contains two strands and each of these contain four nitrogenous bases
  1. Adenine
  2. Guanine
  3. Cytosine
  4. Thyamine
Nitrogenous bases of the two strands are connected through hydrogen bonds.
It is found that, Adenine always forms hydrogen bond with guanine while Cytosine forms whydrogen bond with thyamine only.
Thus, in order to keep the two starnds of DNA together, they must be complimentary to each other and not same.
