Why is ethanol considered to be ‘renewable’ but octane is not?

 Ethanol may be produced from corn and other crops grown and harvested via fermentation processes. Thus, ethanol is considered to be renewable. 

Octane primarily comes from the processing of petroleum and natural gas, which are not renewable.
