Due to Lanthanoid contraction their radii becomes approximate equal and therefore,
their propertoes both becomes similar.
The radii and the trasition of 4d and 5d are almost equal.

The transition metals of third series have nearly the same radii as metals of second transition series above them. This is because of the phenomenon known as lanthanoid contractions which involves filling of f- orbitals. Because of the shape , screening effect of f-orbital is minimal.

Both Hf(Z=72) and Zr(Z=40) have similar properties because of the increase in radii from second to third transition series vanishes because of lathanoid contraction .Hence their properties are similar and moreover their is a poor shielding effect of d subshell makes their size sane
