Why cathode rays does not depend on the nature of gas present in the tube?

Cathode Rays are only light emissions of which are indistinguishable so the charge to mass proportion (e/m) of Cathode beams is same for all gasses. 
Hence,the cathode beams don't rely on upon the way of gas.
