The process of electrolysis involves the chemical decomposition of electrolyte when current is allowed to passed through it in the molten or dissoled state.The device in which the process is carried out is called electrolytic cell.
In case of aq.solution of NaCl ,on passing the electricity, H+ deposit at cathode and produces H2 gas.Thus H2O molecule reduce at cathode as follows-
2H2O + 2e- ------------> 2OH- + H2(g)
while,Cl- ions deposit at anode and produce Cl2 gas.
Cl- ----------------> Cl + e-
Cl + Cl --------------> Cl2(g)
Thus overall reaction of electrolysis of aq.NaCl is given as-
2Na+ + 2Cl- + 2H2O --------------------> 2Na+ + 2OH- + H2 + Cl2
