Dear Student,
We know that the compound contains the mixture of Fe2+ and Fe+3 ions , but we don’t know how much each of them is present .
The trick we will use to solve this question is charge balancing .
Let us say that we have 100 moles of the compound .
So, there will be 93 ions of Fe2+ and Fe3+ and 100 ions of O2- ,
Since the compound is neutral so, the (-2) charge of the oxygen must be balanced with the overall charge of iron ions.
Let us say that we have x ions of iron (II) and y ions of iron(III) . Now ,
x+y = 93 ….............eq.(i)
also,
total positive charge = total negative charge
x (+2) + y (+3) = 100 (-2) ….............. eq.(ii)
solving eq.(i) and eq.(ii) we get ;
x= 79 and y=14
so, we hav 14 Fe3+ ions and total ions in the compound is 193. So, the percent composition of Fe3+ ions in the compound is = ( 14 Fe3+ ions / 193 total ions ) * 100
