Solution:
The number of VE of neutral Al is: 3 3
Assign the 3 positive charges to the central element (3-3) 0
Calculation of sigma electrons contributed by attached groups
Add 6 Cl groups (each of which contributes 1 electron) 6
Conclusion
The geometry is determined by a total of 6 sigma-framework electrons.
This corresponds to 3 sigma framework vertices (trigonal planar array of sigma framework vertices).
6 attached atoms for 3 sigma framework vertices implies (3 - 6) = -3 lone pairs.

Now, to figure out the hybridisation, AlCl3 exists as a diamer i.e. Al2Cl6 and each molecule has Sp2 Hybridisation. There is no molecule AlCl6.
